In 2024, Let’s Make AI Boring

On August 17, 1943, 376 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers of the Eighth Air Force embarked on a critical mission to Schweinfurt, Germany, targeting a ball-bearing plant. Despite the loss of 60 bombers, the mission highlighted the strategic importance of mundane ball bearings in World War II—without them, tanks and airplanes were immobilized. This episode illustrates how seemingly ordinary, “boring” components can wield immense strategic value.
