Don’t hang your coat on that spring-cooler

This one is from the Renaissance Hotel in Cleveland. Apparently, a lot of people must have tried to hang their coat on this and broke the spring-cooler. So what does this say about the design?

Perhaps, the way it is located invite people to think that this is to hang a coat.

Or, the room does not have a place to hang a coat. Perhaps, they can place a nice nook so that people can hang their stuff on.
